Authority, Culture, and You: Navigating Power Distance at Work

This session examines the Power Distance Index (PDI) and its impact on how ideas, authority, and leadership are perceived within AEC firms. Designed for in-house marketing and business development professionals, the session explores how differences in comfort with hierarchy and decision-making can lead to misinterpretation, conflict, or burnout. Attendees will learn how to assess their own PDI style, decode their firm’s cultural norms, and adapt their communication approach to navigate both hierarchical and collaborative environments. Participants will leave with practical tools and strategies to build influence, advocate effectively for their ideas, and work more confidently within their organization’s power dynamics.

Learner outcomes
  1. Learn what Power Distance Index (PDI) is, identify their own PDI style and assess how it aligns (or clashes) with their firm/manager’s style
  2. Learn how to own your message and insights in both hierarchical and flat organizations
  3. Leave with tools to improve communication, collaboration, and influence across generational and cultural divides.
